The School of Biological Sciences is housed in modern, custom-designed buildings and boasts research and teaching facilities to international standards.
Ecology laboratories are equipped to measure泭environmental parameters at the macro and泭micro levels. They include seawater, Antarctic泭and freshwater aquaria, as well as environmental泭chambers with controlled light and temperature.
A large microscopy facility is also available for泭sorting and identifying organisms.
Animal physiological laboratories contain泭research equipment for neurophysiology, ion and泭water regulatory physiology, cardiac, respiratory泭and exercise physiology.
Molecular genetics and molecular biology泭research laboratories are fully equipped for DNA,泭RNA and protein analysis, recombinant DNA泭techniques, real-time PCR and microinjection of泭macromolecules into cells. We also house the泭Canterbury Sequencing Facility and Ancient DNA laboratory.
We have a microscopy facility which includes a泭confocal microscope.泭
An extensive plant herbarium and insect泭collection are housed in specialist facilities.泭Plant physiology laboratories have research泭equipment for transgenic plant production,泭including comprehensive plant growth rooms泭and greenhouse facilities.泭
Biochemistry and biotechnology labs house泭advanced tools for the study of macro-molecular泭structure and enzyme function.
Microbiology laboratories have equipment to泭study the genetics, physiology and biochemistry泭of a diverse range of microbes.
The school has a computational cluster for high-performance applications such as bioinformatics泭and ecological modelling. Researchers can also access time on super computers too.
