HOW TO APPLY
Organisational and community wellbeing, and applied psychological research

Dr. Jennifer Hoi Ki Wong is a senior lecturer in psychology whose research focus on泭 how psychological science can enhance individual, organisational, and community wellbeing. With a strong belief in the importance of listening, empathy, and social connection, she provides supervision and mentorship for research students who are passionate about improving how people function and flourish in everyday life.

Jennifers students often go on to work directly with peoplewhether in teams, communities, or organisationsand she finds it exciting to witness their growth at the early stages of that journey. We see them at the beginning of doing something far greaterset to make meaningful contributions beyond the university, she says.

Her supervisory approach is supportive, empowering, and student-centred. She takes time to understand what drives each student, then helps guide them toward research topics that align with their interests and future goals. We teach them to think critically, understand research, and apply it to create their own psychological solutions for people in the community.

Jennifer also recognises the transformative impact of scholarships in enabling students to pursue their research dreams. "The scholarship gives them the security to focus on their studies and the recognition itself is really powerful for a student at that stage of life."

At UC, Jennifer values the sense of belonging created by shared student spaces and the close ties between the university and the city of Christchurch. She encourages prospective students to visit and see firsthand the strong connections between academic research and real-world practice. In psychology, we work closely with organisations in Christchurch, which gives us an opportunity see our research translate into practice.
